It’s an unfortunate fact of life that as you get older, you are more prone to developing certain health Conditions. That’s why it’s crucial to go to the doctor regularly, get all the recommended medical screenings, and take regular eyesight and hearing tests.

Here are seven common conditions to be aware of that affect the elderly so you know what to watch out for in yourself or your relatives.

1. Stroke

A stroke is perhaps the condition people fear most acutely as they age. A stroke can occur at any age, but older adults are much more at risk. This condition is caused by a blockage in the arteries in the brain, preventing blood from carrying oxygen to the brain’s cells. The brain cells are then starved of oxygen, which can cause damage and even cellular death. Which is sometimes irreversible and leaves life-long symptoms – particularly speech and mobility issues. Some people can recover from the after-effects of a stroke, but others may never do so. It depends on the stroke’s severity and the individual’s health. Unhealthy lifestyles raise the risk of developing a stroke, so try to encourage your loved ones to stay healthy as they age.

2. Eye conditions

There are a few different eye conditions that can affect the elderly, which is why it’s important to see your optician regularly. Some of the most common include:

  • Cataracts: a cloudy patch that forms in the lens of the eye
  • Glaucoma: which damages the optic nerve
  • Macular degeneration: a condition that affects the middle part of a person’s vision

3. Hearing loss

A reduction in your ability to hear is common as you get older, so be sure to have hearing tests regularly. It can be caused by anything from simple wear and tear to regular exposure to loud noise and genetic factors. A hearing aid can help to make sounds clearer and louder, so this is one useful option to consider if you find yourself struggling to hear conversations or the TV.

4. Loneliness

Perhaps surprisingly, social isolation is one of the most common and harmful conditions for older people in today’s society. It can increase the risk of several other problems, such as anxiety, stroke, and depression. So be sure to keep in frequent contact with elderly relatives, encourage them to take part in social activities like book clubs and coffee mornings, or consider moving them to a luxury care home in Wandsworth where they can meet other seniors.

5. Arthritis

This is a condition in which one or more of your joints becomes inflamed. It can result in pain, swelling, and stiffness, making it more difficult to move the affected joints. Treatments range from physiotherapy to medication and even surgery.

6. Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a weakening of the bones, which increases the risk of fractures after even minor falls or bumps. It’s more common in women than men and can be caused by a wide range of factors. From smoking and drinking too much alcohol to genetics and aging.

7. Heart disease

This refers to any condition which affects the cardiovascular system. One of the most common is coronary heart disease, which is caused by a build-up of fatty material inside the arteries. And may eventually cause a heart attack. Some of the biggest risk factors include lifestyle issues. Such as being overweight, not exercising and smoking – highlighting how important it is to take care of your health, no matter how old you are.
