How to Take Care of Yourself When You are On Periods

Tiredness, bloating, body pain is what defines the life of every menstruating person once a month. Period pain is awful. Bleeding, back pain, weakness, mood swings, irritability, weakness, tiredness, stomach ache, muscle pain are all that comes with it. While periods are a natural process, it may not be an easy experience for everyone. It varies from person-to-person. For some, it’s a breeze, while for others their life comes to a halt. Regardless of how the experience is, it is necessary to take care of your body, as periods take a toll on health. 

There are some commonly known tips that you can follow to ease your pain. Taking a warm bath, keeping a hot water bag over painful areas, and getting enough sleep to let your body recover can help. However, what most people don’t know is that even the food you eat can have a great influence on your periods. There are some foods that you should make a place for in your diet and some food should be avoided at all cost.

Green vegetables are rich in iron, magnesium, fiber, vitamin C and Vitamin K, calcium. They boost iron levels in the body, energy, and maintain hormonal balance. 

Drink enough water

Drinking 8-9 glasses of water is important during periods because it keeps you hydrated. It helps to fight against bloatedness and will clean out all the waste in your body. It will also help you prevent blood thickening. 

Fruits

Fruits contain essential nutrients including potassium, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and help you to stay healthy. It has a wide range of antioxidants. It will boost glucose levels, which will give you energy during these times.

Ginger

Drinking ginger tea improves some difficulties of the menstruation cycle. Ginger is very effective in reducing pain severity. It also helps you to control heavy bleeding. 

Dark chocolate

Dark Chocolate works best during periods. It contains a heavy amount of potassium, cocoa bean, iron, and magnesium. It helps you to control your mood swings. It can also relax your muscles and it does not contain many calories. 

What to avoid eating during periods:

Coffee

Consuming coffee can cause you to have more cramps. Coffee can cause dehydration. Women lose iron when they menstruate and coffee can block the absorption of nutrients, especially iron. Cutting down coffee will make you more healthy and periods manageable. 

Salty food

Eating high sodium food gives you bloating, fluid retention, discomfort, and even a temporary increase in blood pressure in some cases. Eating salty food should be avoided at all costs, no matter how strong you’re craving for it. 

Alcohol

Alcohol leads to a negative impact on your body and can increase problems during periods. Consumption of alcohol can lead to dehydration from which you can get pains and face more problems. 

Pickle

Pickel contains a high amount of salt so it can increase or decrease the amount of water in the body. It also can cause you more period cramps. 

Smoking

Smoking increases the risk of major bleeding. Avoiding smoking allows you to change your hormonal balance for good. 

Use this time to let your body recover and relax. Start reading books of your interest to distract your mind while having mood swings. Do yoga or some light exercise to keep your body moving. Do particularly those things which keep you happy. Treat your body with care and kindness, and don’t undertake too many heavy activities if your body doesn’t support it. Try not to take medicine without a doctor’s consultation.
